点评:We had a positive experience when we visited the Gourand Forest. I believe the main reason for this was the lack of other visitors and the time of year.
The forest provides beautiful nature and scenery and a nice feeling of fresh air. It is also home to a large troop of Barbary macaques.
Being an animal lover I am always happy to see animals living in their own habitat but equally I have concerns regarding any human interaction.
Our experience was a positive one. There were signs instructing visitors not to feed the macaques food other than approved food types. The approved food types were small apples and monkey nuts.
These items were being sold for a nominal fee by locals. I think for local entrepreneurs this opportunity for them has been too hard to resist. At least they are selling suitable food to the monkeys and doing their best to educate visitors how to safely feed them and not frighten them.
The macaques took the food gently, only occasionally squabbling between themselves.
When we visited the forest area was clean and tidy and the macaques looked healthy.
They were encouraged to interact with us in their own time, which they did. There was a broad range in their ages and we also got to see young babies and the head male of the troop.
I thoroughly enjoyed our time here but I am left in no doubt that at different times of the year and with different numbers of visitors present, the experience both for the visitor and the Barbary macaque will differ dramatically.
