点评:We bought tickets to ride the tram and had reservations for lunch. First impressions were deceiving. The girl behind the ticket booth seemed to be more interested in her phone than the people handing in their tickets. When she announced the tram (not train) was loading, then started the narrative for the tour, we realized she was also driving. Ocean, our tour guide, a hidden gem. Her knowledge could have been scripted, but some was her own life experience. Her dry humor and deadpan delivery was without equal. We laughed so hard. She husked a coconut on a wickedly sharp knife protruding from a bench, had to take a break as she was huffing and puffing but did not break stride in her narrative. This is not a huge farm, more decorative than functional. They were lucrative as a sugar cane plantation, but once those were gone, more for tourists including the zip line. They grow macadamia nuts but cannot process as it needs an incredibly strong press of which there is really only one on the Big Island. They grew patches of pineapple, mango and bananas, the latter constantly being eaten by the wild goats that are uncontrollable.
This was also the home studio for artist, Dale Zarrella. He did beautiful carvings from wood pruning of the huge Monkey Pod trees on the property.
We had lunch at Cafe O'Lei, the restaurant at the plantation. My party considered this the best meal we had in Maui. We ordered the chef's daily catch, which was delicious but name was forgotten. Everything we ordered was delicious and very reasonably priced. Reservations recommended although we were able to make it in the morning.
Plenty of shady parking, a lovely walk, several stores for food and souvenirs, lots of information posted around the premises. An enjoyable visit and good value for the money.
