Shark encounter at Makena Big Beach

点评：My son encountered a huge tiger shark about 30 yards offshore at the north end of Makena Big Beach. He was snorkling in about 3-4 meters of water. It was abolutely terrifying--it was on the bottom and started rising towards him. He tried to stay calm and swam towards shore without thrashing around. Fortunately he made it.
He reported this to the lifeguard on duty, who did not warn the other swimmers in the water and minimized the danger of tiger sharks, considered "one of the most dangerous shark species" and second only to the great white in recorded fatal attacks on humans (Wikipedia).
This encounter occurred at 3:40 pm on May 7, 2025. My son estimated the shark's length to be 12'.
Due to its powerful shorebreak, Makena Big Beach can also be a risky place to swim, as the posted signs there warn.
