Not adding it to the original price is deceptive and should be banned. They basically took the same tact as a restaurant adding a service fee for people who don’t tip and actually added it to a product where no one is actually providing a service in real time. Is anyone helping me read the greens or find my ball? That would be an additional service worth a fee. Ah yes, that is called a caddy and you pay a distinct fee for one, and they don’t charge an extra service fee.
You might think, well they need to pay the servers in the restaurant and the people in the golf shop and that is what this service fee is for, as the manager claimed. Two points on that:
1. The servers in the small bar/restaurant: They also add a service charge to the bill. And from what I can tell by the price of food and drinks, they don’t sell it anywhere near “cost”. So they must already be adding in some fee for paying people, electricity, rent, etc. That argument doesn’t hold up. The service fee is just more profit for the Four Seasons mgmt, nothing more.
2. The people at the pro shop: There were 6 people working in a pro shop that was 10’ x 40’. They barely could all fit in this small shop. The price of a polo was >$100, the cost is well below the prices. I didn’t check, but they probably add a service fee to the polo shirt bill as well, which is troubling since the customer service in this shop is severely lacking. These people, over the past 10 years, have always seemed miserable, while everyone else outside the shop has been so friendly. I don’t think anyone of these people play golf or enjoy this job. I think that makes it even harder to pay a service fee for such misery. The price of the golf and apparel are more than enough revenue to pay the staff, the service fee is just more profit for the Four Seasons. They can tell you they are using the service fee for the people, but they already could pay the people with the profit they were making, this is all just extra.
I’ll add, for those reading that think I just can’t afford it, that I can certainly afford this fee. But I draw a line at gouging clients and misrepresentations of prices. I spoke to the manager who didn’t see anything wrong with the way they falsely market this fee. I chose not to play this year and instead invested the $800 in a few very nice meals.
FYI. The Four Seasons Resort owns this golf course. It is a high quality establishment. I’m a big fan of Aramara and Bahia, which are excellent restaurants at the hotel. This golf experience and views of the Pacific Ocean are good and worth a premium, but not worth ~$380.
