点评:This is very easy to miss with everything else to see in Volcanoes National Park, and with the Visitor Centre rebuild right next to it, but don't miss it. Apart from the building's historical significance, it is absolutely brimming with local art. As an artist myself, I'm pretty critical of other art, and often find 'local artists' galleries in small communities quite cringey. Not so here. The standard of paintings, prints, ceramics and photographs is extraordinarily high. Art quality is all about personal taste of course, but I could have walked out of there with 20 or 30 pieces I would have loved in my home. My wife and daughter felt the same. That's rare.
The lady and gent working there (whose names I have rudely forgotten) are passionate about the art, and the environment and wildlife that inspires it. There was no sense of pressure to buy (and as Australians, some things are very pricey). Of course, they would prefer if you did, but they're also very happy just to talk about art and the environment.
It's a few minutes' walk across Crater Rim Drive from Volcano House. Don't miss it.
