点评:We came to Somerset — a family of five — to jump back to the 1980s when our dad fled his country to settle in Shepton Mallet and, most importantly, attend Sexeys School. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, this trip down memory lane centred on walking the groves of the adolescence he shared so lovingly with mum AND visiting Pitcombe Rock Falconry.
What Alan has created with the help of his son, volunteers and a new generation of falconers is inspiring and testament to the good that can be achieved when you do something you love. The netted structure he’s created and the story behind it (providing a sanctuary for his feathered pals that will allow them exercise during bouts avian flu) is wonderful, and you sit right in the centre to interact with the birds of prey.
Less avid bird-watcher and more awestruck falcon fanboy, our dad was hooked on each of Alan’s words as he delivered his exceptional falconry knowledge in an accessible and entertaining way — and so were we.
We learnt so much, enjoyed playing with several amazing species of birds of prey — they fly to and from your glove encouraged by Alan’s titbits — and felt the devotion Alan shows to his birds, each of which has such a unique personality.
Thanks so much for hosting us and giving us such an attentive, private and enjoyable experience! All the best!
