BEWARE OF UNINFORMED "GUIDES" AT THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT

点评：I went with Belgian friends to the Voortrekker Monument. We paid for a tour of the inside. We arrived a bit early, and the tour guide marked our names as present. He said we should wait inside; the tour would start shortly. We entered a section where an older woman began to tell us about the monument and its features. Our tour guide, although he saw us, started the tour without clearly announcing it or calling us together. I asked the woman why we should explore the reliefs on our own when we paid for a guided tour. She explained that the tour had already begun and they were at the fifth stop. I was so disappointed. Had I known better, I would have joined in, even if late. But the woman said she could take us through. We agreed.
What a MISTAKE!! This woman should NOT BE A TOUR GUIDE AT THE VOORTREKKER MONUMENT!! She knows virtually nothing, and had I not known my history, she would have presented us with more incorrect facts. She is not impartial, and the way she depicted the Zulu people was bordering on racism. For example, she stated that the Dutch came to the Cape because they had fled from the Catholics in the Netherlands. She also said that Dingaan and his people had stupid, nonsensical traditions. My guests were so shocked. We left her halfway, as we decided it would be better to view the exhibition on our own. Please take her off duty at the museum!!
The restaurant, on the other hand, was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal.
So, my recommendation is to make sure you have a well-qualified guide and definitely support the restaurant; that is worth a visit.
