点评:This museum is the largest, by gallery space, and oldest art museum in Canada as well as the most visited with approximately 1.3 million visitors annually. The entire museum is contained in 5 different buildings that are connected underground and in total comprise over 571,000 of exhibition space.
We visited on a Friday afternoon as our last attraction in Montreal before we left to return to Toronto for our flight the next day. We started in the newer building across Sherbrook from the original building. I will say here that we drove our own car as we were leaving Montreal after the visit. There is a nearby underground parking garage at Concordia University a block behind the museum on Maisonneuve Blvd. We were easily able to get a space in the afternoon for a nominal fee. We had already bought our tickets for that day online before travelling so we easily entered with an eticket on our phone.
As soon as you enter you see some of the best works produced by leaders of the impressionist movement. You then wind through a series of galleries from Classical to Renaissance to Impressionist to Modern before reaching the back which extends up. Here you can climb to see galleries, but maybe even better you get great views of Montreal and the surrounding skyline. Perhaps the best view is of a 20-story mural of Leonard Cohen (Canadian Singer/Songwriter) wearing a fedora. You also get a great view of the belvedere on Mount Royal.
Then I returned to the entrance and descended to the tunnels. Here there were different displays of Modern Art as you can cross from building to building under the street. Entering the original building you see a large exhibit of Inuit and Canadian art. You continue to the back of the building and there is an interesting display on design that includes a display on computer designs and even a Chihuly glass display.
Finally, I crossed over to an old church that has been converted to museum space. Here there were several great paintings by Canadian artist. Many of these artists I did not know, but I greatly enjoyed their art from Canadian settings. This may have been my favorite part of the museum.
I was able to see something in nearly every building and scan at least 80% of the galleries in 2 hours. No, this did not allow for in depth viewing; however, if you are a skimmer, you can see the vast majority of it. While I have seen AI sites list the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa as the top art museum in the country, this is the largest and oldest Canadian art museum and consistently in the top 3 of Canada. If you even like art and want to see it in Canada, I recommend a visit here.
