点评:The first thing we visited in Montreal was the Biodome which is a part of the Olympic Park, and it is a great attraction that you should make time to see during your visit. If you plan to see the Montreal Botanical Gardens, which are adjacent to the park, or the Olympic Park, you will already be in the area.
The Biodome is housed in the former Velodrome of the 1976 Olympic Park which is worth the visit on its own. After the building set empty for nearly 15 years, the city decided to create an indoor exhibit that features 5 different ecosystems, that are wholistic ecosystems of terrestrial and marine plants and animals native to those systems.
What makes this a great place for tourist is 2 of those ecosystems are just outside Montreal, the Laurentian Maple Forest and Gulf of St. Lawrence with another Labrador coast nearby. The other that shares a space adjacent to the Labrador coast and also nearby are the sub-Arctic Islands with penguins. The only place for Canadians to experience something dramatically different is the last ecosystem, the Rain Forest.
It is unique to experience, only one other enclosed ecosystem structure exists in the Western Hemisphere. While it is zoo-like, it is totally different in so many ways. You get to enter the space that most of the animals have free access. It really is a fun and interesting way to experience these ecosystems with the plants and animals that live in them.
We purchased tickets online before we went for a specific time entry; however, for a Wednesday, it was not needed there was plenty of space. The duration of our visit was 75 minutes, allowing approximately, 15-25 minutes in each ecosystem, remember the Sub-Arctic and Labrador Coast are in the same space, and I felt even rushed the experience was well worth the $25 CA per ticket.
We started in the rain forest and while interesting, it was probably my least favorite. We walked around the base and then climbed within the rainforest exhibit to a common area of the Biodome with restroom and platforms where you can look down into other exhibits. Here you also see a Biodome feature of a translucent glass roof. We then descended into the Gulf of St. Lawrence which was one of my favorites watching the marine birds fly underwater. This exhibit also has tidal pools where you can see all the creatures who call these mixes between land and sea home. We next visit the Laurentian Mountains, which we had hike early that morning at Jacques Cartier National Park. We really enjoyed this ecosystem with river otters while many of the other mammals like beavers slept. Finally, we went in the Sub-Arctic and Labrador Coast, which is very cold, ice on the walls, so dress accordingly.
I am usually not a big fan of zoos as they don't really differentiate themselves. However, this is a totally different and unique experience that should take the time to see when you are in Montreal. It's nature, it's architecture, it's immersion into the ecosystems of Canada, but you can only see it here.
