The cathedral was constructed between 1870-1894 in Renaissance Revival and Baroque architectural style, emulating St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is the third largest church in Quebec and is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Montreal. The cathedral was designated as a Minor Basilica by Pope Benedict XV in 1919.
The churches imposing column embedded facade is very impressive. Above you will see statues of 13 saints of various Montreal parishes, a deviation of the apostles you see atop the facade at St. Peter's. The interior presents a large nave with centre dome under which can be seen a Baroque style baldachin. The interior is adorned with paints of early days in Montreal. There floor and walls are laid with marble and ornate style. It does have the feel of being a cathedral that one might be visiting in Europe.
We very much enjoyed our visit to Mary, Queen of the World Basilica finding it just as nice if not more so than Notre Dame Basilica of Montreal which requires CND$16 per adult entry fee.
