Turaco Birdwatching and Expedition Tours的点评
点评：One of us (Steve) had been with Musa Jatta as he co-guided a birding tour of Senegal, so we knew to contact him at Turaco Birding for a private tour of The Gambia. As soon as we had listed our priority interests, Musa created a custom tour for us to meet our needs and our time limit (one week). The trip worked very well for us, so we are quite happy with the results. West Africa has long had a reputation for logistical break-downs, but our private tour with Turaco Birding had no such problems. Everything went smoothly, just as planned.
Our tour combined birding with cultural tourism, in particular The Gambia’s 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites, Wassu Stone Circles and Kunta Kinteh Island plus its surroundings made famous by Alex Haley’s “Roots.” Among the other cultural sites, Kachikally Crocodile Pool proved most interesting, and we really enjoyed petting one of the docile crocodiles!
Because Steve had already birded Senegal thoroughly, as well as many other African countries, he needed only a few mostly-difficult birds as “lifers.” Our birding guide Modou’s knowledge of all the birding sites and their birds got us several of the target species, plus many other fancy birds that were not lifers but we enjoyed in each repeat sighting. Both Modou and our driver Lamin worked long days for us, diligently maintaining our efficient, custom itinerary while keeping us safe and comfortable on the road and in the field. Especially, Musa and Modou arranged for us to have vegan food for every meal, and the only exception was not their fault (and we merely removed the erroneous chicken from the delicious curry).
In-country tour operators are often a good choice for a well-planned, well-executed private tour at a good price. We are happy that we selected Turaco Birding for our one-week exploration of The Gambia’s special attractions for us.
