Located at 104 Montgomery Street, at the Presidio, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Walt Disney Family Museum was founded in 2009 to celebrate the life and legacy of one of the most well known figures of the 20th century. It is 40,000 square feet of imagination, animation, innovation and inspiration. Who doesn't know Walt Disney, the man who raised animation to an art, tirelessly pursued innovation and created a distinctively American legacy, transforming the entertainment world. Open from 10 to 5;30 Thursday through Sunday, the museum features 10 permanent galleries filled with interactive exhibits and over 200 video screens. It isn't just for kids; it is fun for all ages. Learn everything from Disney's upbringing to his final years. He and brother Roy co-founded Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio in 1923. Did you know that Walt's first animation studio ended in bankruptcy? See exhibits that focus on his early cartoons, invention of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio, Elmer Fudd and Bambi, how he infused his characters with distinct personalities, the making of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," his first motion picture, his wartime efforts, his vision for an amusement park, his forays into live-action motion pictures. Marvel at original sketches, cartoons, movies, music, photographs, drawings and models of Disney characters. And the contemporary interactive galleries and state-of-the-art exhibits that are narrated in Walt's own voice.
