We were picked up punctually in Ubud by Karma, a safe and friendly driver, and warmly welcomed upon arrival in Jatiluwih. The experience began with a beautiful walk through the rice fields, where our guide Made — a traditional Balinese name given to the second-born child — gave us an insightful and engaging explanation about rice cultivation and local plants. Even our children were fully captivated!
After the walk, we harvested fresh herbs and greens from the garden and then cooked what turned out to be the best meal we’ve had so far in Bali — all by ourselves. The cooking was accompanied by live music, and the atmosphere was incredibly warm and joyful.
What made the experience even more meaningful was knowing that we were supporting a truly local family business that provides a livelihood for an entire family. We also felt like we killed two birds with one stone — we really wanted to see the famous UNESCO rice terraces of Jatiluwih and take part in a cooking class, and this experience gave us the perfect opportunity to do both at once.
One thing that stood out especially was the exceptional level of cleanliness and attention to hygiene. Everything was thoroughly prepared, gloves were provided, and the water used was pre-boiled — you could clearly see that they care deeply about maintaining high standards for their guests’ safety.
Made and his wife both studied tourism at the Polytechnic School in Bali and have many years of professional experience — and it shows. Everything was done with care, warmth, and professionalism.
This may still be a hidden gem, but we truly hope this wonderful business receives a TripAdvisor Award soon. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Bali!
