点评：Overview & Background.
We boarded the Fred Olsen cruise ship Balmoral at the port of Southampton 26/09/2023 for a 34-day cruise to celebrate both Karen & myself 20th wedding anniversaries, retirement & reaching the milestone of 65 years of age.
This adventure would be our longest holiday that we have undertaken and the countries we would be visiting included Canada, USA, Bermuda, Portugal & Spain.
Prior to booking this cruise, we used to enjoy walking for miles & sharing that most precious of commodities “Time together” But since we booked this cruise father time has taken its toll on Karen’s walking abilities and she now needs the assistance of a walking stick to keep her mobile. Karen was concerned that her walking difficulties may limit our port experience on the cruise of a lifetime and was one of the reasons why we decided to book both a private tour.
Tours.
This would be our second visit to St Johns N.L Canada on a cruise ship. Although we had a good knowledge of the port layout & location and the ports proximity to the City of St John’s including the terrain “Hilly, but the city is on your doorstep”. Our first visit to this port was for 10 hours and included a whistle tour by using a mini cab that took us around St Johns main tourist spots within an hour and where we were able to stop at several interesting locations, point & shoot, back into the cab and repeat the process. Followed by a visit the Yellow Belly brewery local watering hole.
When checking the cruise itinerary, I was surprised that Balmoral's first port of call was St Johns, and we would be alongside for two days and based on our 1st visit to St Johns we had seen all that this port could offer within one hour.
We decided to investigate what else the port of St Johns could offer a retuning tourist by seeking professional tourism help, after all two “days just twiddling our thumbs "was not an option.
After utilizing a well-known search engine, we hit on “Just Landed Tours” and after a lot of email flowing back & forth (me changing the itinerary and asking Mary for possible solutions). Terms & Conditions. (No deposit required but if you change your mind then please let me know.) We booked a five-hour tour with Just Landed Tours dated 02/10/2023 and planned to revisit the local watering hole early afternoon f 03/10/2023 and enjoy the Canadian hospitality and refreshments.

After a 4-hour delayed departure Southampton and the Captain then announcing the following day that we should expect further transatlantic delays due to the increasingly deteriorating sea conditions. The repercussions, the ETA into St Johns was now a day later 03/10/2023. Our only concern was for Mary (See T&C’s) and a vision of Mary waiting at the key side looking at an empty berth where the MV Balmoral should have tied up and no way for us to contact her as we are now in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and without iPhone signal.
Mary & Customer to our rescue.
We arrived into the port of St Johns as per the updated ETA at 07:30 and I promptly phoned Mary who was aware of the ships delay as she has a link to the port that monitors the port arrival times. Unfortunately, Mary confirmed that she has a booking for the 03/10 But had a solution. The customer who had booked both a long tour with Just Landed Tours dated 03/10 and a short tour for the 04/10 was made aware of our situation and thankfully thay switch the tour dates allowing our tour to go ahead in the afternoon. “Thank you so much for changing dates and making our tour possible”.

How wrong was my evaluation of St John’s when I believed that we had seen all that this city could offer us on the first visit. Mary is a mobile encyclopaedia of knowledge whose gift to communicate such gold nuggets of information by taking you to a place and time in St John’s history and explaining to those in her charge the historical significands of events and the consequences for St John’s evolution.
Whether the location was the grounds of the Commissariat’s house, Quidi Vidi Lake. 2nd World war USA base, associated horrors of Gibibit's hill, Cabot Tower and the history of both the Towers and the surrounding buildings, dynamite and its repercussions for Signal hill’s, Marconi relationship with Cabot Tower, Geological features and the effects for those houses located on Outer Battery Rd & Cape Spear, its 2nd world war & lighthouse history and so much more.
Evidently, St Johns has so much more to offer, and we looking forward to returning to St Johns hopefully in the not-too-distant future.
