点评：Pahanthudawa Ella is a scenic waterfall located near Belihuloya in the Ratnapura District, Sri Lanka, close to the border of the Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces. It is one of the most unique waterfalls in the country because of its distinct rock formation.
The waterfall is formed by the Belihul Oya river, and it drops through a narrow rock opening before flowing into a natural pool below. The main drop is estimated to be around 15–20 meters in height, but the striking feature is not the height—it’s the dramatic “stone gateway” shape that the water passes through.
To reach the falls, visitors usually start from Belihuloya town and travel a short distance by road, followed by a moderate hike of around 1–1.5 km through forest paths and small streams. The trail is relatively easy but can become slippery during rainy seasons.
The best time to visit is during or just after the rainy season (around May to September) when the water flow is strong and the surroundings are lush green. During dry months, the flow reduces but the rock formations remain clearly visible.
The pool at the base is shallow in some areas but can be deeper depending on rainfall, making it a popular spot for cooling off. The environment is calm, natural, and less commercialized, giving a raw and peaceful experience.
Overall, Pahanthudawa Ella is less about height and more about its unique geology, scenic hike, and natural bathing spot. (But you have to be very careful when bathing)
