Safety Is Important, But So Is Inclusion

点评：We visited Explorium yesterday for a birthday party, and unfortunately, what should have been a fun and inclusive experience for my daughter left me quite disappointed.
I completely understand that safety requirements have to be respected. My daughter weighs 22 kg, while the minimum required weight for one of the activities was 25 kg. I accept that I should have checked the weight requirement beforehand, and I take responsibility for that. However, I believe there is also a responsibility on the venue to consider what happens to children who, for safety reasons, cannot participate in a particular activity.
In this case, the children who could not go on the activity were left sitting on a bench, separated from the others, with the option of using VR. My daughter did not want to use VR, and there did not appear to be another meaningful alternative. As a parent, it was very difficult to see several children sitting there feeling as though they had done something wrong or were being left out of the birthday experience.
I tried to explain this to the staff and asked if there could be another option that would allow my daughter to remain with her friends and still feel included. Unfortunately, rather than looking for a solution, the response focused mainly on explaining the rules and placing the responsibility on the parents. While parents certainly have a responsibility to check the requirements, I don't believe that should mean that the child is ultimately the one who experiences the consequences by being excluded.
My daughter should have been able to share the experience with her friends, even if she could not participate in the specific activity. I believe Explorium could make a meaningful difference by creating a nearby alternative area or adapted activity for children who cannot participate in certain attractions because of safety restrictions. The alternative does not have to be identical; it simply needs to provide a comparable sense of participation, fun and inclusion.
Most importantly, children should not be made to feel that they have done something wrong because they don't meet a safety requirement.
I am sharing this feedback because I genuinely hope Explorium will consider improving this aspect of the experience. Safety should always come first, but safety and inclusion do not have to be mutually exclusive. A better Plan B could make a huge difference for children and families in exactly this situation
Please don't just ask parents to check the requirements. Think about the child who doesn't meet them, and ask: “What experience are we giving this child instead?”
