Despite lots of construction, a lovely zoo that demands the opening of your wallet

点评：I was pleasantly surprised by the Oakland Zoo, having wrongly assumed it would be small and easy to complete in an hour or two (at least three hours is required to see everything). Despite quite a few exhibits being closed off due to construction, there was a lot to experience. One thing I wasn't expecting was two separate levels- the older portion of the zoo, and the newer California Trail atop a mountain accessible by an aerial tram.
My one main complaint is a lot of extra costs involved. I expect rides like the Sky Ride (separate from the aforementioned one) and Conservation Carousel to cost additional money, but asking $6 to ride the train to Wild Australia (which is the only way to see the small exhibit) seemed like a bit much on top of $7 bottles of water and a mandatory $13 parking fee. I understand taking care of animals is an expensive proposition, but I can't recall another zoo experience costing so much on top of what seemed like a reasonable entry fee.
Nonetheless, the Oakland Zoo is a wonderful place to spend time and I'll return with my wallet open next time I'm in the area.
