点评：The Roman Temple of Hercules at the Amman Citadel was an unforgettable experience. Even in its partially ruined state, the temple exudes a sense of grandeur and power, reminding you of the might of the Roman Empire in this region. The massive columns that still stand are awe-inspiring, and even fragments of the original structure convey the scale and ambition of the building.
Walking among the ruins, it’s easy to imagine the temple in its prime, hosting ceremonies and gatherings in honor of Hercules. The open-air setting allows you to fully appreciate the architectural details, from the column capitals to the weathered stone floors, while also offering sweeping views across Amman.
Visiting in late August, we found the early morning the best time to explore — fewer visitors and cooler temperatures made it easy to take our time photographing and admiring the site. Even in the heat, the temple’s imposing presence makes it worth every step of the climb up the hill.
Tip: wear sturdy shoes and bring water, as the site is on elevated terrain. The Temple of Hercules is a must-see for anyone at the Citadel — a true testament to Roman engineering and a striking reminder of Amman’s layered history.
