点评:I enjoyed my mid-week visit to Xanten archeological site which memorializes the CUT (Colonia Ulpia Traiana). Weather was decent for mid-autumn so I didn’t have to worry about rain or warm temps.
The site is large and it’s nice to see that the price of admission (€11) will go towards maintaining this land with such an important history (and part of a UNESCO world heritage site). There are multiple compelling reconstructions (amphitheater, nice big main gate, houses, fragment of an important temple with original altar and workshops). The best part of the site is the museum that is built next to very well preserved public baths.
Because this colony was on the Rhine river, there are good examples of a barge that was preserved in the river silt as well as 2 reconstructions of river faring vessels (pictured).
I spent about 2.5 hours between walking the site and the museum and highly recommend to anyone interested in Roman history.
