点评:This experience is labeled "Meets animal welfare guidelines" but it does not. I felt there were a lot of red flags going on here.
For one thing, this violates the "Physical interaction with animals in captivity" rule in the guidelines and none of the exceptions apply.
Read rules here: https://www.tripadvisor.ca/Trust-lIFsY9GSDYn4.html
It is one thing for them to allow the interactions, it is another for them to allow the interactions to occur they way they do. The elephants are forced to the edges of the enclosure so the interactions are forced — they should at least be allowed to choose if they want to interact and certainly there were some elephants that did want to.
Secondly, the staff provide no instructions on how to touch the elephants. If they are going to allow this, they need to give instructions. Some people gently touched the elephants but I saw too many people doing too many weird things to the elephants like hitting them, squeezing them, and scratching them. My face was permanently cringed for the rest of the day.
Additionally, the staff need to be on the watch for poor treatment of the animals by guests and they need to be empowered to say something when guests are touching the animals inappropriately (the Giraffe Centre is notably very good at this and is a great example of how staff advocate for the safety of the animals and the guests). If they can't do that, they simply shouldn't allow people touch them at all.
Another guest also asked them if any of the elephants have ever not been able to be released back into their habitat and the staff member answered with a very short "no". While I don't actually know whether that is true or not, there was something about the response that felt off. I find it hard to believe that they have never had that problem while other good organizations do and the shortness of the response felt unnecessarily defensive if they actually do release them.
