Disappointing Stay at a Poorly Managed Campground

点评：I recently visited Lake Hemet campground, hoping for a pleasant weekend escape but was left quite disappointed. As a frequent camper in Southern California, I was drawn to campground because it allowed campfires despite the prevailing fire bans. Unfortunately, that was the highlight of my stay.
The campground's layout was more congested than expected, with the campsites packed far too closely together and inadequate bathroom facilities. Given the high price, I anticipated modern amenities, but apart from one distant building (a 15-minute one-way walk from my campsite) with running water and showers, the rest were just typical stinky outhouses, no different from what you'd find at much cheaper state parks. Earlier in the day, we took a walk to check out the showering facility while the sun was still up and encountered numerous broken beer bottles along the path. This encounter should give you an idea of the type of place this is and the clientele it attracts.
My biggest issue arose with late arrivals. After a typical post-work drive on a Friday, I reached the campground around 11:30 PM, only to find the main gate closed with severe security measures, including tire-popping devices. The reservation information did not include a gate code, despite the presence of a keypad, and while a late check-in phone number was provided, it explicitly stated it was only for use before 10 PM. After some confusion and re-reading my booking details, I realized that no "guest" entries were permitted after 10 PM—a detail I had initially misunderstood due to its poor wording. To improve clarity, they should explicitly state, "Absolutely no check-ins between the hours of 10 PM and 7 AM."
Stranded at the gate with no way to access the campsite I had paid $70 per night for (for a tent spot!), I reluctantly settled in the parking lot for the night, which meant no access to a bathroom. Determined not to let this spoil one of the few weekends we had available for such a trip, I checked in the next morning, intent on making the best of the situation despite the initial setback.
The sole upside of camping here was the allowance of campfires and the proximity to the lake, which might attract those interested in fishing or boating. However, this is tempered by high rental fees and arbitrary restrictions, such as declared high winds on a calm day, which thwarted our plans to rent a kayak.
In summary, while the campground offers some appealing features like campfires and lake access, the high cost, strict entry policies, and inadequate facilities were significant drawbacks. The campground seems to cater more to a party-going crowd than those seeking a traditional outdoor experience. With numerous far cheaper state campgrounds and even some free sites open to the public only a few miles down the road from this place, that is where I'll be staying from now on. The benefit of having campfires during bans does not outweigh the many drawbacks that this place offers.
