点评:Hawker is the gateway to the central Flinders Ranges and Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park with stunning views to the north. The War Memorial takes the opportunity to use views in making this memorial one to remember. It is open, spacious, maintained and well organised.
Infosignage abounds relating the local’s story in times of war. One group this is often forgotten is the local women. I was impressed that a plaque honours the local CWA members who prepared parcels of woollen goods prior to the men departing and then continuing to send parcels on a regular roster during the war period. The other moving aspect was the lone cross with a helmet slung over to memorialise Australians who lay in unmarked graves.
The sculptures through the area have a rustic touch adding to overall Australiana feel of the memorial. Well done Hawker in an outstanding innovative memorial. The Australia Army field gun on display is a replica used in the “The Lighthorsemen” a 1987 movie that was filmed locally.
It is worth an hour or so to wander through and join the locals in their thanks.
