On Sunday, April 6th, I embarked on an excursion with my son, which I had booked under the name "River Quad and Buggy Safari Antalya." We were picked up from our hotel at 10:30 AM and transported towards the mountains for our adventure. There were two options available: a quad or a buggy. Although we had initially chosen a quad, I inquired with one of the staff members upon arrival about the safety of the buggy. The staff member informed us that the buggy was indeed safer due to the presence of a seatbelt, prompting me to pay an additional €10 to switch to the buggy. Afterward, we spent five minutes attending a safety briefing, which outlined important rules such as the prohibition of smoking and drinking, as well as the restriction against swapping drivers during the trip. We were also instructed to maintain a five-meter distance from the vehicle ahead of us. Once the briefing concluded, we proceeded to our vehicles to commence the trip. After settling into our buggy, we secured our seatbelts, which were fastened with a carabiner clip rather than the usual safety release mechanism; at that moment, I did not think to question this design. We then set off, first driving around the compound for two laps to allow the staff to assess our driving skills before the excursion officially began.
We set off on an off-road adventure, having experienced heavy rainfall earlier in the week. As we navigated through muddy puddles and rocky hills, my 13-year-old son and I enjoyed ourselves for about half an hour. Positioned as the last buggy in our group, I noticed in the distance that the others were entering a swiftly flowing river, which I later learned is called the Koprucay. Following instructions, we maintained a safe distance and proceeded into the river behind the buggy ahead of us. We were in the water for merely 30 seconds when the buggy in front slowed down. I eased off the accelerator and turned to check on my son. In an instant, our buggy began to tilt and then sank on the right side, quickly submerging beneath the river's surface. The next few minutes are a blur; I somehow managed to slip my seatbelt and escape the vehicle. Disoriented by the murky water, I lost track of both the buggy and my child. As I surfaced, I realized I was unable to swim and began to struggle against the current. I must have been carried approximately 50 meters downstream before I felt the riverbed beneath my feet and managed to pull myself onto the bank. Once I reached safety, panic set in as I frantically searched for my son. Gasping for air after swallowing water, I screamed for him, fearing the worst—that he might be lost. To my immense relief, I spotted him about 50 meters away on the riverbank, while our guides and photographers remained on their vehicles, seemingly indifferent to our plight. My son, unaware of how he had escaped the buggy, later recounted that he had been calling for help for me as he watched me being swept away, but the staff appeared more concerned about the vehicle than our safety.
I held my son tightly for several minutes, coughing up murky water while trying to comprehend the situation that had just unfolded. The buggy we had been using was nowhere in sight. Anger surged within me, prompting me to confront the six or seven employees, even as I struggled to catch my breath and my vision blurred. These despicable individuals attempted to claim that I had deviated from the designated path and that the accident was my fault. However, I possess the contact information of several witnesses who can confirm that we adhered to all instructions and remained with the group as directed. Afterward, my son and I exited the group and entered another buggy, with a staff member hastily escorting us back to the starting point. Upon our return, the employees falsely asserted that they had entered the water to rescue my son, only to later change their story, stating that the person ahead of me had gone off course, which led to the incident—yet another untruth. I inquired about the location of the buggy we had been using, and was informed that it had been discovered 200 meters down the river, overturned and submerged. Thankfully, we survived, but the outcome could have been far worse. It is imperative that these buggies are equipped with safety release mechanisms for their seat belts. This excursion should not involve navigating a fast-flowing river without knowledge of what lies beneath the surface. The staff must cultivate a sense of humanity; every life is more valuable than a mere buggy. There was not a single apology or expression of empathy. To add insult to injury, they later asked my son for £15 for some photographs. It is astonishing. If you value your safety, I strongly advise against engaging with this company. The only language they seem to understand is money.
I strongly encourage all travel agencies, hotels, and excursion companies to sever ties with these individuals before a serious incident occurs. Stay safe
