点评:I love a ruined castle and this relatively small example met with my approval.
Set in a small but dense area of woods, close to the river, the castle and its neighbouring mausoleum have bags of deliciously gloomy atmosphere (the more gloomy for the lowering clouds that prevailed at the time of our visit). You might even call it spooky, if you're that way inclined.
It's slightly tricky to find, being off the main roads and hidden by trees but it's worth persevering for a short but memorable visit.
When you first arrive there are all kinds of dire warnings posted about, regarding this being private property and visitors enter the vicinity of the ruin at their peril. However, once you get in amongst the trees, it becomes much more welcoming, even providing information boards for the visitor.
I assume the stern warnings are partly about insurance and partly to reduce footfall on the site to those who have a true interest. I wouldn't care to test the resilience of the crumbling walls, all the same.
Worth a look if you're in the area and interested in history. It's free to enter.
