点评:We visited this wetland wildlife sanctuary a couple times during our visit to Maui. Surrounded by warehouses and industrial the marshes were not much to look at first glance but it didn’t take long to appreciate the waterfowl that were taking advantage of this natural preserve.
This sanctuary was a former traditional Hawaiian fishpond or loko pu'uone (inland fishpond). It was designated a bird refuge in 1951 and state wildlife refuge in 1971.
There were numerous Hawaiian stilt (Ae’o) stalking the shallow waters near the parking lot and many more nesting on the opposite shore. A Black-crowned night heron also fed in the marsh as did Hawaiian coot ('Alae Ke'oke'o) and Wandering tattler (ʻūlili). There was a roofed stone blind from which to observe the avifauna out of the sun. We also spotted the Pacific golden plover (Kōlea).
Upon our return we spotted other bids including Scaly-breasted munia and the iconic Hawaiian goose (Nēnē) which flew in landing on the narrow strip of land connecting the parking lot with the covered blind. There were numerous other birds flying over and past us including cattle egrets and Franklins gulls.
Kanahā ponds was a peaceful and fruitful place for great birdwatching .

Kanahā
