点评:It amazes me that there are almost no reviews by foreign tourists for Recanati. It’s a very lovely (and much under-rated) town and it’s a shame that so few overseas visitors make it to this beautiful part of the Italian countryside.
If you are visiting the more well-known town of Loreto, Recanati is very close and is worth stopping at, even if it’s only a quick visit.
Although I’d been before, I happily returned again this year with friends who wanted to do a few day trips around the area.
We spent a couple of hours in Recanati.
A good starting point is Piazza Giacomo Leopardi, the the charming main square.
We went straight here and had a light lunch and drinks, sitting at an outdoor table in the sun and soaking up the atmosphere. A good way to start exploring the town.
Several of the town’s historic highlights are clustered around the piazza, including the very grand Palazzo Communale, the ancient Borgo Tower, the 13th century Church of San Domenico, and the central statue of the much-loved poet, Giacomo Leopardi.
Afterwards went for a long stroll through the historic centre. There are pretty corners at every turn (although strangely the cathedral is a very plain and ordinary looking building).
You can’t walk around Recanati without tripping over references to Giacomo Leopardi. Plaques around the town cite verses of his poetry.
For those on the Leopardi trail, there are several sites to visit, including the Leopardi Palace (still inhabited by his descendants), the Tower of the Lonely Sparrow, Colle dell’Infinito (the Hill of Infinity), the Church of Santa Maria in Montemorello (where he was baptised in 1798), and the Leopardi rooms in the Museo di Villa Colloredo Mels.
All of the sights were within easy walking distance of each other.
NOTE: Parking inside the town is not easy and you need to avoid all ZTL zones (or cop the fines). We found street parking outside the walls easily and it was free.
