Tree ferns, amazing views and charming water garden!

点评：We spent a wonderful 3 hours visiting this amazing garden on a warm sunny day in May. The backdrop of Loch Melfort and its islands is staggeringly beautiful and there is a great vantage point over the bay in the upper part of the garden. Like the National Trust for Scotland’s Inverewe Gardens, Arduaine benefits from the Gulf Stream so tender plants flourish here, including a small plantation of tree ferns and New Zealand’s daisy bush. The upper part of the garden is in transition, having sadly had to remove its canopy of Japanese larch due to Phytophthera, but there is still much to see as the gardeners were able to protect the shrubby understory, which is also re-colonising with foxgloves and other seedlings. We weren’t sure about the large number of fallen logs being left, but presumably they will form part of the new designs for this area. Some wonderful rhododendrons, azaleas and other shrubs flourishing in a terrane which felt like a Mediterranean hillside, such was the warmth and intensity of the sun! Much of the lower garden, perhaps our preference, was a charming and cooling water garden of cascading streams and pools. There are some fine herbaceous borders and mixed shrubberies though which will provide welcome summer colour. For cafe and shop, including a small plant centre, and, yes, highland cows, visit the next door Loch Melfort Hotel with its gorgeous sundeck looking out onto the loch. Very relaxing and best carrot cake I’ve had for a long time!
