点评:If you love New York and her vibrant history, that’s the place for you. The Museum wasn’t busy at all when I visited and I enjoyed the first floor displays almost alone. The entrance is free for NARM members.
The first wing on the first floor is the Port City gallery, which tells the story of New York City's remarkable three-century evolution from 1609 to 1898 It started as a small trading village shared by the Native people (Lenape) and the Dutch and gradually grew into the largest, most vibrant, densely populated, diverse, and prominent city in the United States.
The Dutch created New Amsterdam, the center for their fur trade, and later the town has become a thriving seaport renamed New York by the English.
In the 19th century, the city has became America's economic and cultural capital, attracting talented people from all over the world. By the 1890s, when New York was well on its way to becoming the world's second largest metropolis after London.
The second wing on the first floor is dedicated to the events of the 20th and 21st centuries… the building of the subway system, the theater, the skyscrapers, the parks, the demonstrations and riots, the tragedy of the 9/11 and remarkable resilience of all New Yorkers.
The museum tells you about New York prominent citizens, emigrants, diverse communities, their old and new traditions and the objects on display make their story settings come alive.
I was not too interested in the temporary exhibits, but the Doll House installation is charming.
And don’t miss the stellar staircase! It is full of light and absolutely breathtaking.
The “Amy’s Bread” cafe on the second floor is a nice place for a cup of coffee and a delicious pastry.
