点评:We visited the Museum of the City of New York on May 20 to see two exhibits: “Building New York City” and “The Occupied City.” Although radically different exercises, each was a “knockout, must see” show.
Joe Macken’s miniature reconstruction of all of New York City is truly amazing, showing craftsmanship, artistry, dedication, and love of New York. Filling an entire vast space, this floor-level representation allows viewers to see the vastness and complexity of all five boroughs, the surrounding waterways, and associated islands. Landmarks are faithfully and carefully constructed; neighborhoods are clearly identifiable – indeed each house and building has a spot – leading visitors who are natives to ask, as I did, “where is the house in which I grew up,” or “where do we live.”
Celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday, The Occupied City focuses on the years that the British controlled New York during the Revolutionary War. It is apparent that the curators of this exhibit wanted to bring home the human factors associated with British rule. There were several story lines, including Loyalists fleeing persecution from the Revolutionaries forced to live in tent encampments; inhabitants enduring several extremely harsh winters (recall Valley Forge); soldiers clearing vast forests in order to have firewood; indigenous populations choosing sides; slaves fleeing to the British with the promise of freedom. Many personal items of the inhabitants enhanced our connection to the people involved, and to present day world and national issues. The Occupied City provides an excellent education of the struggles the population endured during the period leading up to and after the “war for independence.”
Copies of old city maps - detailing still-existing street names and landmarks - reinforce our connection in the present to the past; just imagine the stories of the countless thousands of people who walked these same streets for over 300 years.
