Despite its potential, the museum's offerings fell short of expectations, particularly in terms of historical depth. The 1931 earthquake display, while poignant, felt underdeveloped, lacking the extensive detail and context that such a significant event warrants. Similarly, the Māori display, though respectful, was more of a surface-level introduction rather than a comprehensive exploration of the rich indigenous history of the region.
Beyond these, the museum offered little to satisfy a thirst for historical knowledge. The exhibits felt sparse, as if the museum was caught between trying to appeal to a general audience while neglecting the depth that could make it a truly enriching experience. There were missed opportunities to delve into Napier’s unique heritage, the rise of its Art Deco architecture, and the broader social and cultural transformations the city has undergone.
