点评：Although the site is small, I spent almost 3 hours here and still didn't see everything.
3 cottages show differences between the lives and living conditions of different people working in this cottage industry. You can open drawers and cupboards to get further insights from their contents.
It was fun using the circular machines and making part of a stocking, which I was given to take home, and chatting with the very interesting and informative volunteer in this building.
The toilets (the historical ones, not the visitor toilets!) were a stark reminder of how basic - and pongy! - life was.
A fascinating hour or so, chatting to Colin, a very knowledgeable and informative volunteer, in the machine shop or whatever it's called, brought to the fore the terrible working conditions and exploitation of the poor in those days, but best of all was his explanation of the way the knitting frames work - which is complicated and ingenious. How amazing the mind of someone who can invent that!
Colin also demonstrated a working machine.
The coffee shop was also great. Good service and delicious cake and coffee.
I can't wait to go back and see the bits I didn't have time for.
I highly recommend this fascinating little museum - be sure to talk to the volunteers and staff and ask questions!
