点评:The sheer size and elegance of this telescope will have all ages in awe. The free entry ensures all families get to experience The Dish up close. We discovered the fascinating story of how this Aussie icon played an integral role in the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
We enjoyed the 3D theatre's three short docos (half-hour all up): $9.50 for adults, $8 for students/concession, and $35 for families (2 adults + 2 or more kids). We came away with some nice mementos from the gift shop. It catered for all ages, and stocked many educational science books for primary school-aged kids. The Visitor's Centre had some good hands-on activities for kids. Lots of info boards were around, and it was interesting checking out the old receiver cabin that was on display (that little white box that's held up by three legs over The Dish).
There are no eateries in the vicinity, so pack a picnic lunch and make use of the on-site picnic tables that overlook The Dish (I emailed ahead of my visit and was told they're hoping to have their cafe up and running in early 2025). The bathrooms were squeaky-clean, and there was plenty of parking.
Next time, I will try to coincide my visit to when The Dish is undergoing maintenance (which happens regularly) to see it being lowered as far down as the grass to allow the maintenance team to jump on - a sight to behold, I'm sure! I believe they have open days that include tours through the circular building and up onto the base of The Dish.
I watched the movie, 'The Dish' in preparation for my visit, and it certainly upped the excitment levels of seeing it in real life while travelling that last stretch on Telescope Road! The Dish is something I would always come back to see if I was driving through the Central Tablelands region again.
