点评:This modern, abstract fountain is one of several public artworks along the Loire riverbank at Amboise (on the Quai Charles-de-Gaulle).
This is the work of the famous Surrealist artist, Max Ernst and this alone was enough to interest me.
It’s a quirky piece. It’s more about the sculptures than the fountain.
The figures are curious. There’s clearly a small turtle in the middle but the other figures are more ambiguous. On the sides are strange robot-like human (or are they frogs?). At the top, is a sort of hybrid bird-man-like figure who looks ready to take off.
The plaque is also intriguing. The inscription reads, “To the spitters, to the funny ones, to the genius”.
I wasn’t at all clear what this obscure dedication meant although I later found out that the figure at the top was ‘the genius’ and referred to Leonardo Da Vinci, who spent the last 3 years of his life living at the Chateau Clos Luce in Amboise.
If you walk a little further along the river, you will see another sculpture by local artist Fred Chabot, which features two metal giraffes.
