点评:I was the oldest tourist in our group. I had the least mountaineering experience of anyone there. But I made it to the roof of Africa, to Uhuru, at an altitude of 5,895 meters.
None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary team of 32 Tanzanian guides and porters led by Peter from Twende Africa Tours.
At nearly six thousand meters above sea level, when the cold and lack of oxygen cloud your mind, and your body begs you to fall asleep while walking, these people didn’t let me give up. They made sure I stayed awake and kept moving. They bore the brunt of this mountain, teaching me a lesson in solidarity and what it means to be supported when you feel you can’t go on.
The peak reflected in my sunglasses in this photo is not my trophy. It is the reflection of the collective effort of those who believed in me before I believed in myself.
And that’s how I changed my life. I am a different person. I have set myself free. On the highest peak in Africa, called “freedom.” Some changes come from within, others are given to you by people you’ve barely met, but who remind you that no one reaches the summit alone.
Asante sana to the 32 wonderful people, and to Radu Albu from Extreme Expeditions, who knew how to put together such a team.
