Fabulous Tuscan town with great public transport links.

点评：Colle di Val d'Elsa is a gem of a place.
We based ourselves there for 5 nights in a great self contained accommodation called The Whitehouse which we booked on Booking.com.
Colle di val d'Elsa was a great base as has great bus connections to Volterra, San Gimignano, and Siena. By bus you can travel to nearby Poggibonsi which has rail connections to Empoli for Florence and also to Siena.
We traveled to Lucca via Poggibonsi by bus then train to Empoli then train to Lucca.
Colle as it's known locally, has the lower flat, more modern town, then the historic upper town, is reached by walking up a very steep incline.
The upper town is beautiful, very authentic, with soaring views over the surrounding countryside, well worth the effort. There are some really nice eateries and bars there with lovely terraces to enjoy an evening drink and meal.
We stayed in the lower town it was closer for the bus.
What we really enjoyed about Colle was it was a slice of a real, unspoilt Italian town.
No awful over touristic trinket shops and tour groups.
The local people were friendly and genuine.
We could have a Gelato in the main piazza in the evening, the Nonnas were there with their families and the grandchildren were playing. Older men were grouped together discussing football and politics, it was what we came to Italy to see.
So there is a really nice place to come to in Tuscany if you are using public transport, with good travel connections. Its Colle di val d'Elsa.
Have a break from the tourist hype that seems to have overwhelmed the rest of Tuscany.
