点评:In a nutshell, I’d use Tony and company again.
Tony is a gifted communicator / salesman in the best spirit of P.T. Barnum. His “office” is located under a tree on the beach at El Mangroove Resort. He accepts credit cards via contactless pay. I suspect you might catch him in a good mood and try to haggle for a discount — if you’re that type of tourist — I’m not.
We selected a “Sloth/Waterfall” tour for $450 for two, van transportation to a small, family-owned reserve called “Jungle Life Costa Rica” near Tenorio volcano. (98% sure on the name as there are numerous family-owned reserves in the area. Look them up for their positive reviews on TripAdvisor as well.)
I did not think to ask how many other people would be with us, so VERY HAPPY that it was just the two of us. We left the hotel at 7:30 am. Our wonderful driver was bilingual and affable. He’s a freelancer as are most of these driver/guides in the region. We greatly enjoyed his knowledgeable banter. On the way to the reserve he stopped randomly along the road, helping us to view howler monkeys as well as crocodiles.
The first planned stop was at a little waterfall, a tiny bit of a steep hike on slanted steps with a rope handrail to guide you. It was around 9:30 am at this point, so only a few folks in the water. Swim if you like, a lifeguard is watching. The waterfall admission is include in Tony’s fee.
The Sloth reserve itself is on the edge of a national park. It’s a sweet family rainforest with walkable gravel paths meandering through a dense “jungle.” You are not on safari in uncharted territory. Think petting zoo minus the petting, or Florida alligator farm definitely minus the petting, or mini San Diego wild-animal park minus the barriers and you’ll be fine and dandy. I suspect you’re “guaranteed” to see some wildlife
The sloth tour takes about an hour and our driver/guide stayed with us most of the time. He was every bit as knowledgeable as the reserve guide. You are not IN the National park, but on privately-owned land on the edge. As reference, Jungle Life charges $25 per person per their website which Tony prepaid as part of the $450.
Our driver/guide arranged for lunch at La Granja restaurant connected to the reserve, a VERY TASTY meal with a beautiful panorama view of the park region. Again, the price of the lunch plus tip was included in Tony’s fee. The view… priceless.
On the return, a stop at a local souvenir shop / market was allowed.
All in all, it was a solid experience, safe, comfortable, and all inclusive. We tipped the reserve guide, and driver/guide.
Doing the math, we paid $225 per person for a private air-condition van, guide/driver, waterfall swim, sloth reserve, lunch, and a “get-to-know-the region-road-trip” for first timers to Costa Rica.
Area: Bijagua, Upala, Costa Rica
Guide: Eithel
Cost: $450 for two
Time: 7:30 am to 2:00 pm
Maestro: Tony of Costa Rica Zone Adventures
