Alebrejes in Oaxaca and San Martin Tilcajete

点评：I visited the David Hernandez workshop this past week the second week of March 2025. We were greeted by an English speaking worker there and given a full tour of the whole process of creating alebrijes from conception to finish. Each worker greeted us at there stage of the process as they demonstrated their techniques: sketching, wood carving, wood blemish and crack repair, prepping for painting and painting. The symbols/patterns used in painting were explained as well as the concept and origin of alebrijes. This work shop and one other workshop in San Martin Tilcajete, Jacobo & Maria Angeles, produce the finest quality work in the town. We walked about and visited some lesser known producers to see the quality at various levels, but none compare to the work of the artisans of the two workshops I mentioned above.

This location displays and sells the less expensive pieces produced by this studio, most under $100.
The following two stores have large selections of alebriges at various quality levles reflected by their very good prices. On my one month long trip to Oaxaca, along with the Jocobo & Maria Angels Gallery mentioned above, these are the best shops I could find. Some (not all) of the alebriges offered in these shops match the quality of that produced by the best shops mentioned above in San Martin Tilcajette and comperable or cheaper prices:
