点评:Basse Ville, or the Lower Town of Old Quebec, is a beautiful area of preserved historic stone buildings and cobblestone streets. Filled with shops and restaurants, Basse Ville is a mecca for tourists - it was even more crowded during our visit when a Celebrity cruise ship docked overnight.
Like every tourist who visits Old Quebec, we walked down Escalier Casse-Cou (aka Breakneck Stairs) – afterwards, we rode the funicular back up to Dufferin Terrace.
While in Basse Ville, we shopped along Rue du Petit Champlain, passed by Umbrella Alley and had lunch at the popular Le Lapin Saute. We also did a cruise on the St. Lawrence River that took off from Basse Ville.
We visited Place Royale but did not get a chance to go inside Notre Dame des Victoires Church (one of the oldest stone churches in North America and the site of Samuel de Champlain’s first settlement) because we missed the few hours it was open. Note - some tourist sights in Old Quebec are only open during the summer high season or like Victoires Church, shorten their hours after Canada’s Labour Day.
We admired an outdoor trompe l’oeil mural titled La Fresque des Quebecois that honors 400 years of Quebec’s history. We also dropped by EXMURO, a free gallery featuring provocative modern art installations.
We wished we had more time in Old Quebec. We did not have time to visit the Musee de la Civilisation or explore the Old Port area.
