As the primary carer for a 37 year old man with autism, I feel compelled to share a distressing experience he endured during tour around Canberra, at the beginning of October.
The incident occurred toward the end of a tour of Canberra and its surrounding areas. While on the bus, the tour passed a group of young girls, around 12 or 13 years old, filming themselves dancing on the street. In full hearing of all passengers, the tour operator made an offensive and inappropriate remark, suggesting that the man with autism approach the girls to ask for their phone numbers.
This comment was humiliating for this poor man, causing him visible distress, and likely made other passengers uncomfortable as well. Unfortunately, the tour operator offered no clarification or apology, leaving everyone in an awkward and unsettling atmosphere for the remainder of the tour. The poor man with autism continues to ruminate over the incident, which has caused him significant emotional distress.
