Good cave adventure.
Stephens Gap的点评
点评：Excellent first time cave exploring. First you must get a permit from the SCCI website to access this cave. It is free but takes some time to get approval once everyone in your party signs the release form. I recommend applyng at least a week in advance. Helmets with lights and chin straps required. No single hikers, minimum party size is 2. You will recieve the gate code once permit is approved.
Cave located about half hour east of Huntsville, Alabama in town of Woodville. Trailhead parking lot has picnic area and port o potty. Trail is almost a mile one way and starts off easy but gets gradually harder and steeper near cave. Generally rocky and steep the last quarter mile. Trail is well worn and well marked. There are a few small creek crossings, they were dry when we went but may be flowing after a rain.
At the cave entrance there us a small level area where you can look at the actual entrance and contemplate your entry strategy. The access to the cave is a steep jumble of boulders that are quite slippery as you get deeper into the cave. Take your time and choose your own adventure. There is a waterfull in the cave that was barely a trickle when we were there. There is a roof opening that allows some shafts of light in for a ghostly and beautiful effect. I think the best time to go would be near mid day so the sun has best angle into the cave. Explore carefully and don't go to close to drop offs.
Getting back out is much easier than getting down in. Once back out you can go up the hill a bit more and view the hole in the roof that allows the sunlight into tbe cave. BE CAREFUL! This is a sheer drop into the cave, best viewed from a distance. There is a memorial near here for someone who fell in.
As far as level of fitness needed I am 63 years old, 40 pounds overweight with a bad knee and I made it, it was not easy and took a long time but I made it. Not recommended for kids. Well worth the effort.
