点评:We had a very nice time climbing Mt. Karimsimbi in March 2025. Beyond the Gorillas Experience picked us up at our hotel in Kinigi the morning after we went gorilla trekking. The terrain was quite beautiful, more open trees than the thick bamboo forest of the day before. Some amazing views of the other volcanoes. The park guide and tour team was very solicitous and helpful.
The tour company took care of everything well, providing sleeping bags, pads, rain coats, some extra warm gear, water, etc. There were many porters, a cook, and we were accompanied by several armed park rangers. (There was another couple on the trip using a different tour company, so there actually were two chefs and other duplication.) Everyone was very nice and helpful Food was very good and abundant, though we weren't super hungry due to altitude.
After getting the permit and guide, etc, we started hiking around 9:30am. We made it to the camp around 1pm and decided to push on to the summit that same day rather than go up in the morning. (I think it might have been a pretty slow afternoon if we had waited until the next day-- not sure what we would have done all afternoon at the campsite.) We reached the summit around 4pm and then back to the campsite at 6:30pm. Might have done the whole climb in one day, but we would have had to start a couple hours earlier and it would have been a very long day. Instead we hiked out in the morning (~3 hrs) getting down at ~10am. There was a lot of mud on the trail and in places above the camp it was quite steep. We were lucky with the weather in that it only started raining (with a bit of hail!) on our way down and generally was pretty clear during our trip. We had lovely views on the way up and down but not at the summit where it was clouded over. In camp, there was a charcoal fire and we slept in a wooden cabin on the floor with sleeping bag and camping mattress, warmed by a toasty hot water bottle.
After the hike, we arranged with BGE to go to a local hotel for a shower and lunch and were even able to get our shoes cleaned and a quick load of laundry. Headed back to Kigali, leaving 1:30pm and made by 5:30 or 6 for evening flights home. Would definitely use BGE again and recommend them as a tour company!
