点评:Let's be clear right from the start. There are two museums here, one over the road from each other. The Kleine Brogel Air Force Museum, which is the subject of this review, and the Tiger Museum, which in previous reviews has been wrapped into reviews on the former and can thus be a little confusing. I will review the Tiger Museum separately.
The Kleine Brogel Air Force Museum has limited opening hours, just Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1330 - 1600, so plan accordingly. It also lies in the Air Base's grounds, so has restricted access. However, it is straightforward to contact the guardroom in advance to arrange a visit, and on arrival to exchange formal identification for a visitor's pass. As we were working on base for the week, we didn't have to worry about that.
Entry is just 2.00 euros (concessions apply for children). There is a small car park to the left immediately before the museum, but it's a quiet spot so parking was not an issue for us.
The museum tells the story of the requisition of farmland in late 1944 as Allied Forces rolled the Germans back east and the construction of new airfields close to the front-line became critical to keep up with the land forces. Working room to room in chronological and well-signposted order, the museum tells the story of the base, the people, the aircraft and the squadrons right up to the present day. Obviously much of the material comes from the base and personal archives, and is thus rare and unique offering an amazing insight into this base. For the historian, it is a dream, while for the casual visitor, there will be exhibits that illuminate or fascinate. Lots and lots of photographs, plus physical exhibits of every description. The only aircraft that I assessed was part of this particular museum was the Fouga Magister. Interpretation boards are everywhere, in Flemish and well-translated English.
There are rest-rooms on site, and very limited refreshments. However, if the Tiger Museum is open, they have a full bar!
For the enthusiast, you can easily spend a couple of hours here. Maybe a bit less for the casual visitor as the amount of information can be somewhat overwhelming, but definitely worth a visit. If nothing else, for the F-16 selfie-spot just before the base entrance!
