点评:We did the circular walking trail around Hollerday Hill as part of the much longer, Valley of the Rocks Coastal Path walk. If you only do Hollerday Hill, then it’s a fairly short, easy woodland walk which only takes about 30-40 minutes.
The highlight is the view from the top. A bench seat is positioned near the edge of the slope. It positively screams to you to sit down and take in the panoramic view down over the Valley of Rocks and out to sea. It really is spectacular. We found ourselves, sitting here, gazing out to sea for much longer than we’d intended.
Most of the Hollerday Hill walk is through heavy, shaded woodland. There are a couple of minor points of interest to look out for - the remains of an Iron Age Hill fort and the spot where Hollerday House used to stand. Once a grand mansion, it belonged to George Newnes, who built the Town Hall and Cliff Railway. There’s nothing left of it now but a sign marks the site.
The easiest starting point for the Hollerday Hill walk is to join the path alongside the Lynton Town Hill. However we came from the Valley of the Rocks, in the other direction. The path at this end starts beside the cricket pavilion. Its a very steep, zig-zagging path but it gets you up high very quickly. From here, the rest of the walk is pretty much a gentle downhill slope.
The path is clear and is easy to follow. It’s not isolated - we passed several people on the path, most of them locals, walking their dogs.
Take a full water bottle because there’s nowhere to re-fill.
It’s also helpful to have a map. You can’t really get lost but there are several smaller tracks that you might like to follow if you want to go for a wander.
