点评:The Falconer for the Day experience was outstanding. The morning was spent learning about falconry and Paul's wealth of knowledge and experience was second to none.
During the morning, I learnt about the different types of leather used in falconry, and how to condition the leather. Paul showed me how to make a falconers' knot, how to weigh each bird and why it is so important to track their weight because the margin between starvation and bring over weight can be minimal, especially with the smaller birds.
Paul explained the impact modern day life is having on birds of prey, for example, wind farms are significantly impacting negatively on bird population.
I was shown the correct position for my arm when flying birds and Paul also showed me how the birds are trained.
Overall, the morning was packed with information and I was given the opportunity to fly Jaegar, the Harris Hawk and Kevin, the Barn Owl.
After a very tasty lunch, the afternoon was spent flying more birds and I learnt about their habitats, lifespans and individual characters. It was totally exhilarating watching these majestic birds fly, swoop down to almost ground level and then come to land on the glove.
The whole experience was incredible and I definitely recommend it if you are interested in birds of prey.
