TLDR: Danyasa canceled my booking several weeks after confirming it to give my room to another party who offered them more money. When confronted, they never apologized and engaged in victim blaming by saying things such as:
“Michelle, do you believe that life happens for you or to you?”
“I’m sorry you feel that we’ve mistreated you.”
“Maybe this was meant to happen to you.”
Longer Version:
I was so excited to visit Danyasa and had planned a 2-week trip to Costa Rica around my stay there. I told all my friends and coworkers about this amazing retreat I had found, and a few friends even asked to join me on my trip or promised to bookmark the location for future reference. Unfortunately, Danyasa canceled my booking 2 weeks after accepting it in order to give my reserved and paid for room to a party with a group reservation in order to make a larger profit. I will list their actions below:
1) I booked a nonrefundable round trip flight to Costa Rica based around my stay at Danyasa. (- $500)
2) I booked an entire travel itinerary complete with hotels, excursions, and transportation centered around my stay at Danyasa. (-$1000)
3) Being a last minute cancellation, it is too late for me to book other yoga retreats for my dates of travel, as many are either fully booked, located by different airports, or out of my budget.
4) Danyasa offered to make amends by giving me recommendations for other nearby hotels and free yoga classes to take there, but this offer was so paltry in comparison to the damage they caused.
5) Sophia Thoms, the co-owner, told me this was done out of necessity because they are hurting financially but on the same day they posted a picture on instagram of a crowded retreat venue captioned “Full studio, full hearts.” I guess they're just greedy? Or maybe racist and didn't want me?
6) At no point was I given an apology. In fact, I was blamed for their actions even though I was a victim of them.
7) Danyasa kept insisting their actions were okay because it was only the second time this had happened, but that does not make it any better. If you crash your car for the second time in a decade, does your history of clean driving negate your accident? No, it doesn't. Stop bringing up your past which has nothing to do with me.
8) I never once received an apology or even a seemingly apologetic response from the owners.
9) Although Danyasa did not offer much in the way of concessions, I might have considered accepting it had the owners been kind, gracious, and genuinely apologetic in their interactions with me. Their co-owner, Sophia Thoms, was blatantly condescending and rude, even going so far as to blame me for what they did to me! I quote her verbatim:
“Michelle, do you believe that life happens for you or to you?”
“I’m sorry you feel that we’ve mistreated you”
“Maybe this was meant to happen to you”
Never in my life have I encountered business owners who are so unable to accept responsibility for their actions. It's actually unbelievable. I would absolutely not recommend this business under any circumstances because your word and contract mean nothing to them. They have proven that they will sell your room to a higher bidder.
