Beautiful scenery, but the trip could have been better

点评：We went on this kayak trip with the Wintergreen Sporting Club with about 20 people and Alleghany Outdoors provided three guides to go along with our kayak trip.
The guides did tell us about the river and show us a map before we began. As with all kayak trips, you are required to wear a life vest the entire time, which was definitely a good idea as three people capsized (two in a canoe, which they had been warned might be a problem) and one in a kayak.
However, we were not given any instruction about kayaking--about how to hold the paddle, how to paddle forward and backward, what to do if you get into trouble, to always paddle through a rapid, etc. which we have always been given on other guided kayak trips.
My husband and I kayak on our own and know these things, but it was obvious that several of the people on the trip were inexperienced kayakers. We noticed two of the people holding their paddles upside down, but the guides never said anything to them.
The river was very low (although we were always able to remain in our kayaks), but there were several places where you really had to "navigate" in order to stay in water that was deep enough, and in order to effectively run the rapids. This often created a "bottleneck" of kayaks going through a relatively small area, and therefore, there was a lot of bumping of kayaks and made it a little stressful--especially for people who might not be completely comfortable in a kayak. We felt that it would have been better to divide the group into two different groups with about 10-15 minutes between the groups--that would still have allowed us to all meet up for lunch and at the end of the day.
It was a beautiful day on the water and the rapids were fun for most of the group. The scenery was very pretty and we had a great time, but I'm not sure that we will book a tour with this company again.
