点评:I enjoyed this trip as I was looking to get back to nature after that last five years of worldwide nonsense and I was burnt out from work.
I've done overlanding many times before and had varied experiences with other companies.
This was by far the shortest trip I have done and the most expensive. First you pay for the tour, and with everything these days more expensive than in the past. Local Payment is another sting especially going from AUD to either GPB or USD.... so basically I paid another $1000AUD on top of an already pricy trip. For minimum food, I don't like eating after 6pm and so didn't have dinner most nights, my choice.. I'd like to know what the actual trip cost covers... they really need to break it down for clarity.
Being an old hand at these kinds of tours, I took my own tent, A) because I am a naturally early riser and didn't want to "annoy" a tent mate, and B) Having your own space is key to sanity.
My plan for this trip was just to drop out of my life for a short time, this was accomplished as my phone was not friends with local free wifi and I was only able to connect about 4 times the whole three weeks of the trip, and to be honest other than needing to do some banking, I found out that is was very freeing not being connected everyday, almost like travelling 25 years ago... I didn't even take headphones or music... just books.
My trip for me was about the journey, watching the landscape go by, seeing what the locals did daily and watching the madcap traffic dance, this is great in a truck. Having visited East Africa on a 7 week overland 25 years ago I wanted to see it through older eyes and note the changes... and see the encroachment of humanity on wildlife, which is as expected, everywhere.
We did see the wildlife, although it was sad to take pictures and see houses and buildings in the background... takes away the sense of "in the wild".
My BIGGEST bugbear was the Gorilla Trek van driver "add on". When you book your trip you can either book the Gorilla Trek or not, as this was the main reason for why I booked. But the night before the trek we were advised that we needed to pay $50 USD to the van driver who would take us... and this Pi**ed me right off... I mean you pay for the Trek before you leave, thinking that you wouldn't have to pay any more, and then the night before "oh yeah you need $50 USD ($100 AUD) to the driver" this should have been included in the "Gorilla Trek" optionally payment BEFORE departure. I did not carry a great deal of USD with me as I was not planning on many "optional extras" nor spending on souveniers and as such didn't think I'd need that much cash.
I also wanted to done the Balloon ride over the Masai Mara.... sadly the night before I was informed that my choice of payment was not an option and so therefore I did not do it, and surprisingly I didn't feel all that upset by that, even though it was something I had really wanted to do.. I do feel bad that my guide did go to the trouble to organise it all with the company, but sometimes things just don't go to plan.
I cannot fault my tour guide and driver, they were exceptional and I have nothing but respect for them. Those on the trip got along really well... some were continuing on for a few more weeks and so had a good rapport with each other going forward....
Overall 3 weeks was more than enough for me nowadays, my tolerance level for social interactions sadly doesn't last any longer... :D .
One thing I have noted with Overland trips such as this is the number of "grey nomads" that now take them. when back in the day it was usually 18-40 years olds... seems that retirees are moving from caravans to overland trucks. Not sure if I'l do a truck trip again as I don't want to be that old nomad..., but wouldn't completely rule it out, I'll just be sure to check the "add ons" with included trips.
Overall not the worst trip and not the best (that was in my 30's) Other than the expense side of things, it was what it was and I went in with personal minimal expectations and just enjoyed the getting away.
