Disappointed by Bodmin Town Centre – A Stark Contrast to the Brilliant Jail Attraction

点评：We recently visited Bodmin with high hopes, especially after hearing such great things about Bodmin Jail – and it truly did not disappoint. The attraction is brilliant: well-presented, immersive, and clearly the result of serious investment and care. A must-see if you're in the area.
However, our experience took a sharp turn when we decided to walk into Bodmin town centre afterwards. Unfortunately, it felt very run down, with many closed or boarded-up shops, a lack of vibrancy, and an air of neglect that made the whole area feel quite depressing. We had hoped to explore a charming Cornish town centre – but what we found was far from it.
We later returned in the evening to try Native Burger, which had excellent reviews. And we’re glad we did – absolutely fantastic food and service, and we can’t fault the restaurant at all. It’s a real gem and clearly one of the best things happening in town.
Sadly, the same can't be said for the surrounding area. After parking in the short-stay car park and walking into the town, we were immediately met with intimidating behaviour from a group of youths hanging around the streets. We received a mouthful of abuse for no reason whatsoever. The atmosphere was genuinely unsettling, and we didn’t feel safe at all.
To top it off, we overheard someone on the phone to the police, reporting that someone had just been attacked nearby. This really sealed our impression that the town centre is struggling and not somewhere you’d want to spend time, especially after dark.
It’s a shame. Bodmin has so much potential. With attractions like the Jail and great local businesses like Native Burger, it could be a real destination. But the town centre urgently needs investment, regeneration, and community support to become somewhere visitors (and locals) can feel safe and proud of.
