点评:Madagascar is a wonderful and magical place. Theresia at Soul of Madagascar helped fulfill a dream.
My husband and I spent the month of October 2024 in Madagascar. We had planned the whole tour with Enock and had paid our deposit. Unfortunately, he passed away unexpectedly. Theresia, who took over the business from her late husband, was very kind, attentive and answered my emails quickly. My cell phone did not work while in Madagascar so Theresia would contact me during our tour via our guide Joushia. Our driver was Rivo. Joushia and Rivo were always on time. Rivo knew the roads very well and drove safely. They made plenty of stops for fresh water to take to our rooms at the lodges. The roads in Madagascar are very bad and we had some very long days of driving. One day it took us 13 hours to get to our destination. There were other days that took 10 hours. The ferry crossings were organized and we enjoyed the short time on the river on our way to and from Tsingy. There were a few issues at the end of our trip with the vehicle. The back window would not go down and the air conditioner stopped working.
If you can, I would suggest flying between destinations when possible. Theresia and Joushia always kept us up to date on the three internal flights we had. The departure times always changed. That is not the fault of Soul of Madagascar.
We had to pay in cash everywhere we went so we were glad Joushia allowed us time to exchange our money at the international airport on our arrival. In Tana, we found a wonderful Indian restaurant called Le Paris-Delhi India and at the train station a wonderful little gem called Grand Café de la Gara that would take visa credit cards. If you find yourself at Grand Café de la Gara you have to try the lemon tart. We went back a second time just for the tart and some coffee before our late-night flight home.
Our lodges were good. We did notice that if there were roaches, they were in the bathrooms at the hotels in the cities. I saw some reviews that complained about roaches. The lodges in the National Parks were very clean, good food, helpful staff and there were always a few very friendly geckos to hang out with in our room. I enjoyed listening to them calling.
Everywhere you go one has to have the guide from Soul of Madagascar and a “local guide”. We told Joushia we wanted bird photos besides the normal lemurs that all the local guides take you to see.
We had talked to other tourists and found out that at some places, Anja Community Reserve was one, you will be met by the local guide and a “spotter”. You don’t need the spotter. That is what the guide is there for. Tell the local guide you don’t need the spotter and if the spotter still comes along there will be no tip for him.
FYI… the tips started adding up with all the added local guides but we were told it was regulations.
Some local guides are disrespectful of the local wildlife. We had a local guide at Anja Community Reserve show us a Hamerkop nest. There were some would-be spotters that started throwing rocks at the nest to see if the birds were there. My husband quickly grabbed the one spotter’s arm and lectured the spotters about disturbing the wildlife. There were a few other locations where the local guides were disrespectful of the wildlife. We saw local guides shake trees and branches to get the lemurs to move. We know the guides think their tip depends on how much the tourists see but throwing rocks at bird’s nests and moving branches to get the lemurs to move is not going to get a better tip. There were other guides that were very professional and kept demanding and uncaring tourists (some from a certain country known for their disrespect and rudness) back from disturbing wildlife. NO, it was not us.
Once Joushia understood we wanted to see and photograph birds he would arrange for the local guide to be more of a bird person. Our local guide, Sandra, at Isalo was great. She really knew her birds. Some of the local guides do not understand bird photography. They run ahead looking for birds and scare the birds off. Joushia understood this after the first few times and would keep the local guides back so a photo could be taken of the birds. Misaotra Joushia and Rivo for taking care of us while we were in Madagascar.
Madagascar is a wonderful and magical place. It has wildlife and birds that live nowhere else on this planet except in zoos. Some of these animals and birds are facing extinction in the wild. There is not much left of their natural lands and habitats in Madagascar. The deforestation in Madagascar is really bad. The wildlife is all in the national parks. Thank goodness the government is creating and protecting the parks. Your tourist money helps protect these animals. If you like adventure and want to see some wonderful and in some cases exotic wildlife then please visit Madagascar. Contact Theresia at Souls of Madagascar to start your next adventure.
