点评:What a fabulous time we had at DIG in York! As a family of huge history buffs, this was high on our list, but it completely exceeded our expectations. We went as a big group—including three bubbly kids aged 7, 9, and 10—and every single one of us was completely hooked from start to finish.
The absolute highlight of our visit was our tour guide, Matt. Being a teacher myself, I was honestly in awe of how he managed the group. Holding the attention of a crowd made up of different families with varying ages/expectations is no easy feat, but Matt is a true, flexible professional at work! He made sure everyone in the group was included and felt valued.
What impressed me most was his questioning technique—he scaffolded questions for both the adults and the kids so superbly. When our family started sharing facts we’d learned from our own research, Matt didn't just nod and move on; he knew exactly what we were talking about! He seamlessly incorporated our knowledge into his talk and even brought out specific objects to spark our attention further. It made the whole experience feel so personalized and engaging.
Pros:
Matt the Tour Guide: Absolutely brilliant! Friendly, knowledgeable, and exceptional at keeping kids and adults equally entertained.
Hands-on History: The actual "digging" pits are brilliant for the kids to get stuck in, and the artifacts are fascinating.
Super Inclusive: Fantastic atmosphere where no question is a silly question.
Cons & Missed Opportunities:
I wish I had thoroughly researched their website before booking! I didn't realize they run amazing special themed events, such as Cressida Cowell's "How to Train Your Dragon School" (including Survival School and Warrior School!). My child is a massive fan of the books, so I was gutted we missed out on these. Top tip: Check their website's event page well in advance so you can plan your trip around one of these!
Top Tips for Visiting:
BEST TIP: Try to book the last "dig" slot of the day! We went at the very end of the day and it was wonderfully quiet, which gave us a much more relaxed, intimate experience in the dig pits.
Cost Breakdown:
Tickets: ~£11 per adult, £9 per child (Or look into the Pastport ticket if you are planning to visit the JORVIK Viking Centre too, as it saves a lot of money!).
Location/Access: Located in St Saviourgate. Easy to walk to from the city center, but parking in central York is always tricky/expensive, so we recommend using the Park & Ride.
Souvenirs: Cute little gift shop with lots of pocket-money-friendly bits for the kids. Mine spen tlal their money here in York :-)
We will definitely be back to catch one of the special events next time. A massive thank you to Matt for making our day so special!
